19th annual International Humanitarian Conference organised by Webster University

From February 14 2014, the Swiss White Ribbon Campaign held an informational table at the 19th annual International Humanitarian Conference organised by Webster University. Members of the White Ribbon team engaged in prolific discussions with conference participants about the challenges and opportunities for ending violence against women and girls.webster

Dialogue ensued on countless vital topics, including the relationship between violence and societal norms, the role of the media, perceptions of violence as a private issue, and the persistence of gender inequality. Strategies for eradicating violence at the interpersonal level were explored in depth, such as transforming gender inequitable norms within the family and social networks, confronting abusive behaviors, and utilising nonviolent communication. Individuals working in fields such as public health, humanitarian aid, science, education, and conflict resolution reflected on ways the White Ribbon campaign could be integrated into their organisational work. Dozens of people obtained a White Ribbon pin, symbolising their pledge not to commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women and girls.

The Swiss White Ribbon team looks forward to developing partnerships with the dynamic individuals we had the opportunity to meet, and working with them to create a society free of violence.
